Research Proposal, IACUC Protocol Review.

Timing Issues:

  • Upon receipt of a fundable priority score or award notice PIs will submit a Request for Research Proposal/IACUC Protocol Review form to the IACUC Sponsored Research Analyst (SRA) via email to IACUC@yale.edu or a hard copy to IACUC Office, 300 George St., 6th Floor, attention: SRA. If a research proposal has an associated approved IACUC protocol at the time the PI submits the proposal to the funding agency, the PI should allow a minimum of 30 days from the anticipated award date for approval in the event that a protocol needs to be modified.
  • If a research proposal does not have an associated approved IACUC protocol at the time the PI submits the proposal to the funding agency, or the PI does not want to incorporate the work in the proposal into a current IACUC protocol:
    • Indicate “no approved protocol” on the SRA ProSum.
    • Submit a new IACUC protocol along with the Request for Research Proposal/IACUC Protocol Review form at least 60 days prior to the anticipated award date. This time line for approval is longer than for a submission with an approved protocol to ensure there is enough time for IACUC review and approval of the new protocol.
  • Some funding agencies do not provide advance notice of likely funding; investigators are encouraged, when applying to those agencies, to initiate a comparison of the research proposal with the IACUC protocol as soon after proposal submission as possible. The easiest method for timely approval is submitting the proposal and a Request for Research Proposal/IACUC Protocol Review form at the time of proposal submission. The SRA will review the proposal/protocol to insure congruency and approve or request modifications to the protocol and then approve, well in advance of the award date.
