| Return to list of Policies Policy on Housing of Animals Used in Teaching, Research and Training Vertebrate animals used in teaching, research and training must be housed in facilities managed by the Yale Animal Resources Center (YARC). Animals may not be housed in research laboratories for more than 12 consecutive hours without advance approval from the YARC Regulatory and Safety Services (5-4722). The YARC Regulatory and Safety Services may grant exceptions for laboratory housing for a maximum of 30 days. The Yale Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) will be informed of this exception. The Yale University IACUC must approve requests for laboratory housing extending beyond 30 days. The request must be clearly stated, including the justification for lab housing, in the Application to Use Animals in Research, Teaching or Testing (new application) or the Application for Modifications to an Approved Protocol (change in protocol) to an existing approved IACUC protocol.
