Captive Origin Policy
Captive Origins for Yale University Research Animals
Background:
All animals must be acquired lawfully, and the receiving institution should make reasonable attempts to ensure that all transactions involving animal procurement are conducted in a lawful and ethical manner.
Policy:
All animals ordered or collected must go through YARC Purchasing (for animals that are collected, YARC must be notified of what animals were collected and how many.)
-
Purpose-Bred/ Approved Research Facility/ Vendor:
All live vertebrate animals involved in research or education at Yale University must be obtained as purpose-bred by an approved research facility/vendor. If the protocol requires a species not available as purpose-bred then alternate sources may be used.
-
Alternate Sources:
Animals of a species not readily available as purpose-bred may be obtained through approved vendors who perform the collection.
Exceptions to this policy may be permitted with scientific justification. Logical exceptions include, but are not limited to, field studies and research involving specific animal species not regularly maintained in captivity.
