Acclimation Policy
Acclimation Periods for Yale University Research Animals

Background:

The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals indicates that some transportation-related stress is inevitable, but can be minimized by attention to using proper transportation procedures and allowing for quarantine and stabilization according to procedures appropriate for the species and the circumstances.

Policy:

Terminal Procedures:
1. All species of animals involved in terminal procedures can be used immediately following arrival at Yale and after any required quarantine period, with no acclimation unless otherwise stated by VCS. However, investigators are advised that the stress of shipment may impact a number of physiological parameters, (e.g.corticosteriod levels), and this should be considered in planning experimental schedules. Therefore, VCS recommends that animals be acclimated for 3 days, preferably 5 days, prior to any experimental manipulation, regardless of the nature of the procedure.

Non-Terminal Procedures:
2. Nonhuman primates, cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, and farm species must be allowed to acclimate at Yale after transport for a period of 5 days prior to beginning any non-terminal experimental procedures, regardless of their nature. This 5-day acclimation period must occur in a single facility (ie. either at AARF or main campus).

Secondary relocation, as defined as a change in primary enclosure, (e.g. relocation from holding/quarantine) of animals may require an additional 5 days of acclimation. Veterinary approval is required if animals are to be used prior to this additional 5 day period.

VCS recommends that all other species be acclimated for 3 days, preferably 5 days, prior to any experimental manipulation, regardless of the nature of the procedure.
